If you're an Australian citizen or permanent resident, or if you hold a New Zealand driver licence, you can drive in NSW on an overseas licence for 3 months. Within this 3-month period however, you'll need to visit a Service NSW Centre and transfer your overseas licence to a NSW Driver Licence.
You may need to pass a knowledge or driving test, depending on where your overseas licence was issued.
If you’re a temporary overseas visitor who arrived in NSW after 1 July 2023, you can drive on your existing overseas licence for up to 6 months. If you wish to continue to drive after 6 months, you'll need to apply for a NSW licence.
If you’re a temporary overseas visitor who arrived in NSW before 1 July 2023, you'll need to apply for a NSW driver licence before 1 March 2025 if you wish to continue to drive.
